Since seeing Mara Hoffman‘s SS2012 collection, featuring the incredible hand-crafted jewelry by Holst & Lee, I’ve been obsessed by this modern take on African friendship necklaces (essentially, a rope necklace with hundreds of little thread-knots around it that form a block of color). Unfortunately, the necklaces from Holst & Lee are a bit out of my price range (approx $500 each), but I’ve found two articles that show how you can make your own version. I started making one for myself this past weekend and will post photos as soon as it’s done!

The first DIY necklace technique, from the fabulous honestlywtf.com, relies on making little knots with embroidery thread:

The second DIY necklace tutortial, from ispydyi, uses more of a wrapping technique, and seals off the ends of the necklace using hex nuts from the local hardware store. Very inventive and resourceful!
